My (Computer Information Systems) CIS project for this semester is with Grady memorial hospital. It has been a rewarding project where I learn about the health care industry, and meet people I would probably not associate with during my regular day activities. I have been very impressed with the providers (mid level care attendants similar to nurse practitioners) and management. Both providers and management are very excited and willing to help any chance they can. However, I am not as excited about the employment process. This process to get into Grady literally took six weeks from beginning to end. To be fair to the readers of this blog, I feel this process should be spelled out to the T. The first thing any future groups should do before attempting a similar project is to register and apply through the Grady Memorial Hospital Adult Volunteer Application site. This can be found here . Make sure to choose the "fax recommendations" choice, otherwise you will be delayed an extra week. Make sure to be honest on the application (they aren't interested in a low level offence or ticket). If you lie you will not get in. Three days after you put in your application and the references you provided fax in the information, call Brooke (she can be reached at (404) 616-4360). Explain you are a CIS student with Georgia State University (GSU) and she will take great care of you. She will ask you to come in for an interview; which is nothing more than you signing a paper and going to the 15th floor of Grady to get a PPD test (Tuberculosis shot). After the shot you will leave. You will be expected to come back exactly 36 hours after the test to get your results read. Once you pass the PPD test bring your paperwork back to Brooke. She will then schedule you for orientation. This takes roughly two hours and you will get your picture taken (dress nicely). After this you are able to come back within the week and pick up your badge. During this same trip I recommend going to they 15th floor and getting your flu shot. Once you get this you go back to Brooke drop off a paper and you are now able to work within your segment. During this long process make sure to get into contact with your client and schedule a meeting. It is important to have this done before you get your badge so you can start immediately. Consider this my forward to the project process and a special gift that other groups will not offer you. Good Luck!
